Flock, Inc. The Social Web Browser!

19 01 2008

Flock, Inc. The Social Web Browser!

I am writing/posting this through Flock’s “blog this” feature. The browser has gone a long way since its first beta release. In version 1.0, I was amazed by how quickly I had my flickr, twitter and facebook account integrated into “My World” and I love the media browser capabilities. I should note that I found the image above using the media browser to look up photos tagged with “flock” and then copied it to my “webclips” which then allowed me to add it to my blog with just a few simple drag and drops. Overall the browser is clean and nimble. I felt that the start up was faster than firefox however I have to admit I find the number of features a little distracting when I’m trying to do a quick web look up.

With competition heated across Firefox, IE, Safari and Opera I think Flock has a lot to offer with its social features. I for one will be giving this a spin in place of Firefox which has recently been underwhelming and which I only have continued to use for some the extensions I have been using and have become dependent on.

If you haven’t checked it out Flock yet (or recently), give it a hour of your time. You will be amazed by the freedom it provides through integrating the social aspects of web2.0 and how it can help declutter a lot of the stand alone apps that are taking up precious screen real estate.

Digg: We’re Fixing The Annoying Ads

10 01 2008

I have had a number of frustrations with Digg.com over the last year but one thing, which I appreciate the most, has remained consistent. And that is its employees continue to use and communicate to the community through the site. Earlier today a story was posted about annoying autoplay-audio-ads featured on Digg.com that we found by numerous users. The blog post was quickly ‘dugg’ up and made it to the front page. Shortly after Kevin Rose left a comment in the digg page and now they have officially responded with a post which is also being quickly ‘dugg’ to the front page.

For as much as I complain about Digg.com I still visit the site because there are great gems of knowledge and the site continues to provide the best customer support I have seen for its community. Good on you Kevin and crew.

Facebook Spam on the rise

4 01 2008

facebook phishing.pngA couple of days ago I received a wall post to my facebook account from an old friend from highschool. It seems that Facebook phishing is on the rise and whoever setup the sites did a great job at that. I visited the site and the URL looks like like a profile page save that of ending with a .cn after what would be the profile ID. At the page, it prompted me to login so whoever is running the site is collecting login credentials from users. After a minute or so Firefox also verified that the site was fraudulent so be aware and enjoy an increased amount of Facebook spam and phishing attempts in ‘08.

New Year’s Resolution ‘08

1 01 2008

As other bloggers are doing today here is my New Year’s resolution post… In an earlier post I noted the blog’s ‘Resolution and rebirth’. But it wasn’t a real resolution by any stretch of the imagination so here is my SMART resolution.

First SMART is acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. Yes everyone has had to set a goal at least once if it is really something worth doing it should be a SMART goal or in this a case resolution. Using the SMART method, it gives some performance criteria to work towards and at the end a clear definition of pass or fail. Without this criteria the goal can be open to interpretation and victim to being blown off or worse yet “scope creep”.

So without further delay here are my ‘08 New Year’s resolutions:

1. Weigh under 200 pounds by Dec 31 2008 — This is my suggestion of my wife and now that I have money on it I must reach this goal and get back to my normal weight while in college.

2. Post at least once a week to this blog for the full year — Blogging is something I have done off and on but with little thought or effort. This year I want to build out a sounding for board to challenge my own knowledge and share my experiences

3. Launch a web application before October 2nd, 2008 — For the last two years I have been keeping notes of various application and business ideas. This year I want to implement one of them and get it out for feedback and use.

Going back to my business minded side I have action items and milestones that need to be completed and held to for each of these but I will save those for another post.

Best to you in ’08, CHEERS!
