Last Thursday I came home to find my wife went out to the mall again with the kids. However when she returned this time she had a special surprise from the Apple store. For a long time I have expressed interest in moving over to MAC. There is no specific why I wanted a MAC over any other laptop but I was ready for something different and felt that given my career it was my duty to be open to different technology. So on Thursday I opened my new macbook and set out to run it through my normal tasks. Overall I have come to the conclusion that the OS really doesn’t matter anymore. I have also been using Ubuntu heavily and found that as long as I’m using firefox and able to access my news, photos and email a computer is a computer. My first impressions of the macbook/OSX is that it is very slick. Everything just seems to work. One of the most frustrating points with Linux is I had to tweak everything. Not only did everything seem to work but unlike my wife’s Toshiba I just reformatted it seemed to be fairly free of bloatware. The software that came bundled with my mac I actually am pretty interested in trying out. There were a few things I set out to do right away. I installed skype and joost. I have to admit at first the install process was different but by no means can I say that I was confused by it or did it cause me any trouble. I also needed to get a few files transferred over from my old desktop to my macbook. With a quick google search I found how to setup the mac to transfer files and in no time I had my documents, photos and music transferred over.I haven’t done anything at the power user level yet with my macbook but I have plans to do some audio work with it and maybe some development. So far I am extremely happy with and as I continue to use it more I be sure to post my thoughts.
